The Differences Between Costume
Jewellery And Silver Jewellery

The term ?Costume Jewellery? means that
the item is plated and not a precious
metal (i.e. Silver, gold or platinum).
Most costume Jewellery is plated in
either an 18ct gold or Rhodium finish.
The base metals are either brass or tin
alloy with two layers of copper then one
layer of palladium followed by either of
the above finishes.

Most costume Jewellery is made from
Rhodium. Rhodium is a metal from the
Platinum family, it is the most
expensive and durable white metal known.

Silver has been very popular for making
jewellery for many centuries and has
become extremely popular since the mid
1700s. Silver is actually a very soft
metal in its purest form and requires a
mix with an alloy such as copper to make
it hard and suitable for everyday use.

Silver Jewellery is often made using 925
Silver, which means that 925 parts in
every 1000 are pure silver; this
represents an excellent quality product.
Silver Jewellery is hallmarked as proof
of quality.

In the US, the laws state that Jewellery
cannot be sold as silver unless it
contains at least 92.5 percent pure
silver.

Many people expect silver to remain
silver forever, but the silver often
tarnishes when the silver reacts with
gases in the air or with other
substances that it comes in contact
with.

Many people are allergic to the Costume
Jewellery because the alloy in the
jewellery reacts with the acidity in
their skin. This often makes the skin
go green and may result in itching.

Although much of modern jewellery is
designed to be hypoallergenic many
people choose to only wear silver
jewellery because they can be certain
their skin will not react.

Silver Jewellery does not look as
vibrant and shiny as rhodium plated
jewellery and the best combination is
plating silver jewellery with rhodium.
This results in a wonderful shine,
similar to costume jewellery but at the
same time providing protection from any
allergies.

"History of the Silver Morgan Dollar

Perhaps no coin being collected today
conjures up visions of the old west like
the Morgan Dollar. Minted from 1878 to
1904 and then for one more year in 1921,
the changes that took place in America
during the span of the Morgan Dollar are
startling. And although collecting
Morgan Dollars is a favorite of most
collectors, the silver Morgan Dollar was
not that popular of a coin and ignored
by collectors for decades after its
demise. It was not until the early
1960?s that collecting Morgan Dollars
became popular. During this time silver
was near %1.29 per ounce. At that price,
the silver metal value of a silver
dollar was worth a dollar. During this
time many banks still had bags and rolls
of silver dollars and all one needed to
do was go down to the bank and ask for
them.

The Mint Act of April 2, 1792 provided
for decimal coinage. The largest being
the dollar, or 100 cents. From the first
few thousand dollar coins weakly stuck
in 1794 and the many more through 1873,
the dollar enjoyed moderate success.
Dollars were coined on and off until the
Coinage Act of 1873 eliminated the
dollar and put in its place a slightly
larger dollar called the Trade Dollar.
The Trade Dollar was produced with the
intent to export it for trade with
China. As such, very few made it into
general circulation in the US.
Meanwhile, the silver mining industry in
the west had fallen on hard times. As is
the case even today, industries in
trouble look to the US government for
help and the silver industry was no
exception. An idea was put forward that
the US government buy silver bullion for
its own account to help support the
market. Embracing this cause in the
mid-1870?s was Representative Richard P.
(?Silver Dick?) Bland of Missouri. Other
politicians jumped on the bandwagon with
the thought that a strong silver market
would benefit everyone west of the
Mississippi. After much discussion and
debate, the Bland-Allison Act was passed
on February 28th, 1878. The legislation
was initially vetoed by President
Rutherford B. Hayes but congress
overrode the veto putting a new law in
the books. The legislation dictated that
the US government purchase %2,000,000 to
%4,000,000 a month in silver bullion
with the specific purpose to convert the
silver into standard silver dollars (90%PRCTG%
silver and 10%PRCTG% copper). At the time,
silver was around %1.00 per ounce. At
that price, the government was
purchasing millions of ounces of silver
each month.

Back in 1876, Mint Director Henry
Richard Linderman anticipated that
legislation would someday be passed to
create another circulating silver dollar
and had Chief Engraver William Barber
fiddle with a new designs. The legal
tender status of the Trade Dollar had
been revoked and the country was without
a dollar coin. Like today though, but
for different reasons, there was not a
demand for a silver dollar. In 1877, it
seemed like a sure thing that
legislation for a new silver dollar
would soon become a reality. A new
design was needed and Barber, assistant
engraver George T. Morgan and outside
artist Anthony Paquet went into high
gear producing several different
designs. On February 21st, 1878,
Linderman selected the design. Although
he thought Barber and Morgan had high
artistic taste, he selected the design
with the lowest relief requiring the
lowest power to strike. This of course
was the design created by Morgan. The
portrait was modeled after 19 year old
Miss Anna Willess Williams. Morgan had
previously used Miss Williams on several
pattern half dollars in 1877. Several
years later Charles Barber, son of
William Barber, would basically copy
this design for his own coin designs
which later became known as the Barber
Dime, Barber Quarter, and Barber Half.
He also ?designed? the Liberty Nickel.

Just a week after the passing of the
Bland-Allison Act, the first Morgan
dollars were coined on March 7th, 1878.
After several adjustments of the dies,
the Philadelphia mint cranked out the
first dollar coin. After close
examination of the coin, it was rejected
and sent to the melting room. The press
was then adjusted and 11 more coins were
produced. The last was rejected and this
coin was also sent to the melting room.
These first coins were struck on
polished planchets, removed by hand and
put in numbered envelopes with the
intent to deliver the first coin to the
President and the 2nd coin went to
Secretary of the Treasury John Sherman
and the 3rd to Linderman. After that,
the press began churning out 80 dollar
coins a minute. Within a few days,
several other presses would come online
and dies would be delivered to San
Francisco, New Orleans and Carson City.

As mentioned before, the purchasing
power of a dollar back in the 1880?s was
huge. Most transactions were completed
in smaller denominations as large
purchases were under a dollar.
Additionally, many people were still
bartering for goods (trading pigs for
chickens, etc). As such, the supply of
silver dollars far exceeded demand.
Incredibility, with this supply, The
Bland-Allison act was modified by the
Sherman Silver Purchase Act which
mandated the US Government purchase 4.5
million ounces of silver per month. The
hitch was that these purchases were to
be paid with Treasury bonds redeemable
in either gold or silver. Since gold was
seen as the more valued metal, most bond
holders redeemed them for gold which
depleted the Treasury?s gold supply
which then caused a financial panic
through the whole country in 1893. This
led to the repeal of the Sherman Silver
Purchase Act. The result was a massive
slowdown in silver dollar production for
the years of 1893, 1894 and 1895. Not
coincidently, these years also contain
some of the most elusive key dates.
Production picked back up in 1896 but it
would be a few years before production
went back above the 10,000,000 mark for
any individual mint. In 1904, the supply
of silver was exhausted and the Morgan
Dollar ceased production, or so it
seemed.

In 1918, Congress passed the Pittman Act
and recalled over 270 million silver
dollars for melting. Total mintage of
the entire series totaled nearly 657
million. If you subtract out the high
mintage 1921 dates of 86.7 million,
(these were made from the melted older
dollars), around 47%PRCTG% of Morgans dated
prior to 1921 were destroyed. These
silver dollars had been sitting in
Treasury vaults for years just
collecting dust. The provision of the
act, called for the recall of these
dollars for the purpose of making new
ones. So, in 1921, the Morgan dollar was
revived for one more year. Barber had
died four years before (February 18,
1917) and now George T Morgan was Chief
Engraver who you recall designed the
dollar. The Philadelphia mint made over
44 million, the highest number it had
ever made, while the San Francisco mint
made over 20 million, which was more
dollars in one year that it had ever
made. Also, this marked the only year
that the Denver mint made Morgan
Dollars. The New Orleans and Carson City
Mints had long ago ceased operations.
Later that year, the Peace Dollar would
permanently replace the Morgan Dollar.

With the paper dollar becoming more
popular for commerce, dollar coins
vanished from circulation and piled up
in bank vaults. More meltings occurred
due to the War Time Silver Act of 1942
and then in 1979-1980 when silver shot
up to near %50 per ounce. No doubt
millions of Morgans and Peace dollars
were melted. Today, it is estimated that
only 15-17%PRCTG% of all Morgan dollars
produced still exist. Taking this into
consideration, low mintage dates are
even scarcer than their mintage would
indicate making this a very desirable
coin to collect.

Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coin

The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coin is
made up of nearly pure silver. It weighs
in at one troy ounce of silver and is
considered a bullion coin. The coin
obviously comes from Canada, and has a
face value of %5. However, since it is a
fairly rare coin and contains pure
silver, it is valued on the market at
around %20. The Canadian government
introduced this wonderful coin in early
1998, and has continued to produce the
coins yearly. The amount that is
produced yearly varies drastically, some
years as low as 100,000, and some as
high as 3.5 million. The amount of coins
produced in a particular year varied
depending on demand. All of the coins
carry the standard hallmark of the Royal
Canadian Mint, and the coins are still
considered legal tender, though they are
generally a collector?s item. The coin
measures in at 31.9 grams, and measures
38mm in diameter.

Every year the coins have a similar or
identical pattern. The front of the
Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coin displays
a picture of Queen Elizabeth II?s head,
while the back caries an image of the
maple leaf, which is the national symbol
of Canada. Though the design is
generally the same, there have been a
few special editions that look
different. The most famous of these
special editions is the 20th anniversary
edition, which was released in 1999.

The Maple Leaf coin comes in gold,
silver, and platinum. However, due to
the limited amount of silver coins
produced, the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf
Coin is the rarest of the 3. The Gold
and Platinum versions are often more
expensive due to the higher value of the
metal, but the silver balances out due
to its rarity.

The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coin is
considered by most to be the purest
silver coin ever produced by a
government mint. This coin contains
99.99%PRCTG% pure silver, while most contain
roughly 95%PRCTG%. The coin is not only rare
and high in silver content; it also is
renowned for its beauty. The Canadian
Silver Maple Leaf is popular among
collectors, but also among investors.
With silver being less valuable than
gold, it is easier to invest in silver
than gold. Many people have been buying
up all the silver and gold coins they
can find and just letting them sit. In
an unstable economy, it is a good idea
to invest in tangible items.

Findings

No jewellery workbox is complete without
a selection of silver findings.
Essential to any form of jewellery
making, silver findings are cheap,
plentiful and have a huge range of
applications in every aspect of the
craft. Used in everything from earrings
to broaches, bracelets, necklaces and
rings, silver findings are a cheap
alternative to gold, allowing everyone
to explore the fascinating world of
creating their own jewellery.

Silver findings also make it possible to
incorporate other aspects into your
designs such as the inclusion of
precious and semi-precious gemstones.
Jewellery making suppliers have
catalogues full of silver findings
specifically designed to take stones,
ranging from pre-cut cabochons to
unique, one-off designs that can be
adapted to suit a specific stone. The
reflection from the silver finding gives
the stone added depth and warmth,
particularly when working with more
translucent stones such as opal or the
ever-popular amber.

Silver findings also have an added
advantage in that they can be worked and
re-worked to create a specific effect.
If the jeweller is unhappy with the
final result, the stone can be removed
easily and the silver finding adjusted
to give a better fit or finish. Silver
is harder than gold but does tend to
scratch easily so it is essential that
you use the correct equipment when
working with silver findings to ensure
that the surface of the metal is not
damaged. Deep marks can be very
difficult to polish out and may detract
from the beauty of the final piece,
especially if they are on an exposed
surface.

For those who may be allergic to nickel
coated findings, silver and in
particular Sterling silver findings are
a useful alternative as they rarely
cause any form of allergic reaction with
the skin. It does depend on the copper
content of the finding, which if high
can turn the skin a green colour, but by
selecting good quality findings from a
reputable supplier this problem can be
easily avoided. Silver findings used in
earrings are relatively cheap and easy
to use, so it is worth the extra small
expense in selecting these over nickel
plated findings to ensure that your
jewellery can be worn by everyone.

The tiniest finding in anyones workbox
is also the most useful the humble
jump ring. This circular ring, which is
split to allow it to be linked to other
findings, is used in almost every type
of jewellery making, particularly in the
manufacture of necklaces and bracelets.
Its most usual application is to fix
clasps to the ends of strings of beads
or chains and means that bracelet and
necklace lengths can be adjusted to
various sizes. It is always advisable to
silver solder the jump ring once it is
in place to avoid it catching on a piece
of clothing, for example, and opening up
allowing the necklace or bracelet to
separate.

Silver findings are readily available
from all good jewellery making suppliers
and a quick scan on the Internet will
give you plenty to choose from in your
area. However, if youre looking for
more unusual findings, dont be afraid
to hunt further afield to add a bit of
adventurous flare to your designs.

Australian Silver Koala Coin - A Silver
Treasure From Down Under

Some coin collectors have a desire for
acquiring, as part of their treasured
possessions, a collection of silver
bullion coins with exotic animals as
their icons.? These collectors would for
sure find great value in the Australian
Silver Koala issued by the Perth Mint of
Western Australia.

This mintage is a follow-through of the
highly successful introduction of the
Australian Silver Kookaburra by the same
mint in 1990 and the Australian Kangaroo
in 1993 by the Royal Australian Mint.?
Having all three in coins should be a
superb combination for a thematic
animal-inspired silver bullion
collection.

The Australian Silver Koala was first
struck two years ago by the Pert Mint,
which is famous for coins of excellent
workmanship and innovative designs.? The
1997 first year of mintage was an
instant success as the koala whose image
the coin bears is a well-loved creature
the world over.

Numismatists of course will tell you
that it would be erroneous to call this
coin as the "Australian Silver Koala
Bear," although there is a certain rhyme
to this term.? The koala is
scientifically classified under the
genus Phascolarctos, which is rooted
from the Greek word "phaskolos," for
pouch, and the misleading "arktos," for
bear. The koala, however, is a
marsupial, an arboreal or tree-dwelling
animal found only in the tropical
forests of Australia.

The jungle, nonetheless, is no place for
the Australian Silver Koala, but would
be more at home at some treasure
chests.? This collector's delight is a
1-oz coin made from 99.9%PRCTG% pure silver in
a koala design that changes each year.

The latest edition has the image of a
young koala clinging to a tree branch.?
The Perth Mint struck the 2008 mintage
of the coin with a different design
which features that of a mother koala
perched on a tree with a baby
Phascolarctos at her back.

This 2008 mint also has a gold coin
edition in addition to the silver
standard, firmly establishing that
indeed there are lots of treasures to be
found Down Under!

Silver jewelry trend over the years

Different regions in the country have
had their version of silver jewelry.
Some common ornaments that can be found
in silver are broad stiff silver
necklace, thick bangles, ?kamar bandh? a
belt made of silver worn around the
necklace, ?hanth bandh? an armlet worn
sound the arms, anklets and more. These
ornaments still exist in rural India as
a part of the custom.

However in modern times, fashion in
urban India is going through a sea of
change. With the economic crunch taking
a toll on our lives, everything seems to
have been affected. So how would one
expect the luxury and fashion markets to
survive, things we can afford to do away
with. Or can we?? Fashion enthusiasts
say no. Fashion will change to suit
needs and circumstances but will remain.
This has created a huge demand for
silver jewelry. The trend is also
somehow inspired from the west where
white metals like silver, white gold and
platinum are the latest trend.

From designer jewelry to branded jewelry
to the hand crafted jewelry available in
the market, silver has become a hot
favorite for jewelry. Silver is gaining
popularity in fashion circles and masses
given its beautiful white shine,
versatility, durability and
affordability.

Silver jewelry in all forms, silver
rings, silver bracelets, silver
earrings, silver anklets, silver armlets
and more are no only fashionable but
also very practical to wear. Silver
jewelry looks cool in plain and
fashionable designs. Youngsters prefer
silver jewelry for hey can never have
enough of it. The older generation
prefers silver jewelry in vintage
designs.

Sterling silver jewellery is perfect for
every day use. It can be worn with
almost everything and on almost every
occasion. You can wear simple silver
hoops paired with a sleek silver pendant
to compliment your office wear. Or you
can choose to dress in fancy dangling
silver earrings with stackable silver
bangles for your college. On formal
occasions as well silver jewelry adds a
chic elegance to your formal attire. You
can get the sophisticated look of
platinum jewelry with sterling silver
jewelry for a fraction of the cost.
Silver jewelry looks great when studded
with multi-colored stones or beads.
Silver can be combined with other
materials like leather to make high
fashion statement accessories for men.

While gold has always been a favorite in the Indian culture,
in the earlier ages the use of gold was restricted to the
royals and the elite. Silver being the cheaper metal has
been available to the masses.

Jewellery Making using Sterling Silver
Findings

Sterling silver findings are the
essential components that link together
the parts of a piece of jewellery and
give you that professional finish.
Without jewellery findings it would be
very difficult to incorporate gemstones
into your work, for example, or to link
the ends of a simple chain and turn it
into a beautiful necklace. By using
silver findings, you can give your
jewellery that professional look and
increase the value of the finished
piece.

Sterling silver is quite a soft metal,
so gentle handling is required when
working with silver findings. Findings
come in every shape and size and can be
used for practically any
jewellery-making project. Silver is a
particularly good metal to work with
when using gemstones, as its ability to
catch the light adds depth to a well-cut
stone, complementing it rather than
overwhelming its natural beauty.

By using a silver finding that
incorporates a setting for a cabochon,
the depth of the stone is emphasised by
the light reflected back from the silver
behind it. Silver findings can be worked
and re-worked to create the desired
effect, as the metal is a very
forgiving medium to work in and any
mistakes can be easily rectified with a
little care.

If you are working with Sterling silver
findings, it is essential that you use
the right equipment to avoid damaging
the soft surface of the metal. Although
harder than gold, silver scratches
easily and a deep mark can be very
difficult to polish out. Many silver
findings are extremely small (such as
the universal jump ring, crimp beads and
sterling silver earring wires) and can
be awkward to handle. By using a pair of
pointed nose pliers, you can hold your
jewellery findings securely and safely
without exerting too much pressure on
the metal and damaging it.

Silver findings are used in almost every
type of jewellery from delicate
filigree work to brash and cheerful
costume jewellery. Silver is eternally
popular and many people prefer to wear
silver jewellery for everyday use. By
incorporating silver findings into your
work you can turn a simple string of
beads into a more complex design, giving
you a unique necklace that calls
attention both to the elements within it
and to the wearer. Alternatively,
sterling silver findings can allow the
beauty of a gemstone to take precedence
or for foil beads to dominate a necklace
without the eye being distracted by
flashy findings.

Silver findings can also be helpful to
people who are allergic to nickel-plated
findings, particularly in earring wires.
Some people can only wear precious metal
findings in their skin, as other types
can cause an unpleasant allergic
reaction. Sterling silver earring
findings are not as expensive as you
would think, so it may be good practice
to use these instead of the cheaper
non-silver findings to avoid any
possible reaction.

Silver bracelets always look elegant and
are as popular now as they have ever
been. A simple band with a jewellery
finding incorporated into it to hold a
cabochon can make a clean, modern
looking watch style bracelet that
draws attention to the gemstone rather
than the band itself. The same is true
for silver rings, and ring blanks that
have a claw setting in them to hold a
gemstone make the perfect base for a
stunning ring of any size.

Sterling silver findings are an
essential part of jewellery making and
should have a special place in any
jewellery makers workbox. Theyre cheap
and easily available and compliment any
gemstone perfectly.

Silver Craft- Basic Techniques for
Working with Silver

Silver is extremely malleable and
ductile and as such, it is highly
preferred by silversmiths for making
silverware and silver jewelery. Silver
craft takes years to learn as an
apprentice to a silversmith, or in some
college or university offering such
courses. Perfection comes only with
practice. However, the basic techniques
can be learned by anyone who has
patience, and the right tools!

Piercing: Silver is cut to form a basic
shape or to make a decorative pattern
with a piercing saw. When creating a
pattern, a small hole is drilled in the
silver sheet to allow the blade of the
saw to be positioned. The blade is then
attached to the piercing saw, under
tension. Blades can be coarse allowing
fast cutting or very fine for detailed
work. The blades are delicate and can be
easily snapped. As such, work must be
done slowly. The blade is held
vertically and metal is moved slowly to
make curves or corners. Blades are also
lubricated by passing them through
beeswax, which makes cutting smoother.
The work is supported on a bench peg
which is screwed to a workbench having a
V cut into it so that both the sides of
the cut are supported. Small shavings of
metal called lemel are collected from
under the piercing onto a leather or
paper cloth, which are then recycled
into new silver.

Soldering: Pieces of silver are joined
by soldering. Silver solder, that comes
in various alloy mixes but mainly
containing silver, is used for
soldering. Silver solder melts at a very
high temperature and so a blow torch is
used. The temperature required to melt
silver solder is very close to the
temperature at which the piece being
worked upon would itself melt. To manage
the temperatures, soldering and other
torch work is usually done in darkness
so that the color of the metal, as it
heats, can be used to measure the
temperature of the piece. Silver solder
come in soft, medium and hard versions
having lower, higher and highest melting
points. Pieces where multiple soldering
is required use hard solder at first,
and work down the grades with subsequent
soldering so that each addition does not
melt or distort the previous one. Lead
solder should never be used as its high
temperatures cause the solder to run all
over the silver, damaging and making it
useless.

Annealing: The more a piece is worked,
the harder and more brittle it becomes.
Repeated annealing keeps silver soft,
malleable and easier to work with. It is
done with a torch in darkness. Silver is
heated until it gives soft pinkish red
glow, which is the point just before
melting. The piece is then immediately
cooled in cold water, which freezes the
molecules into the alignment they were
in when almost molten, and thus makes it
easier to work. However, working with a
torch leaves fire stain on silver which
is removed by pickling.

Pickling: Fire stained silver piece is
placed in acid bath, mostly sulphuric
acid, to remove any oxidization before
working on it. Pickling salts are used
for works done on smaller scale. The
pickling solution is kept warm to speed
the process. The piece is then rinsed in
running water, and cleaned with pumice
powder to remove any remaining traces.

Shaping: The work is shaped into
finished form in many ways, depending on
the desired shape. Tubular shapes like
rings and bangles are formed on mandrels
that are held in a vice, while the
annealed metal is hammered with a mallet
of wood or hide. Bowls and other such
curved pieces are domed on leather
sandbags, wooden or metal doming blocks,
using wooden or shaped metal hammers.

Polishing: Polishing is a long process,
where a piece is rubbed with
progressively finer wet and dry papers
to remove any tool marks. It can then be
wheel polished, polished with a fine
polishing mop on a pendant drill, or
barrel polished, where it is soaked in a
soap solution with steel shot and
rotated for 10 minutes or so. Polishing
makes the piece smooth and shiny, free
of all marks.

These were the basic techniques of
silver craft. Silversmith, however,
adopt many other advanced techniques
also like hand fabrication, lost wax
casting, die striking, and
electroforming etc. For beginners,
initially its better to work in a base
metal such as brass or copper, as they
are much cheaper metals to allow for
mistakes.

Silver and its jewellery have its
history of its own. Though, today, it
has lost much of its sheen with diamonds
and gold adding to the sparkle more,

It is said, silver was first used in
ancient Italy and Greece for making
ornaments, vessels, coins and various
weapons. Historians found quite an
evidence of silver being used in that
era, in the tomb of Queen Pu- Abi,
dating 3000 B.C. The body of queen was
found embracing exquisite silver
jewellery never seen before.

Ages after, in the 18th century, silver
was used in colonial America. Boston,
Newport, New York City, Philadelphia,
Baltimore, and Annapolis were the main
centers of silver jewellery production.
From their, gradually, this art spread
through various countries like Mexico,
Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Chile, and
Bolivia which showed blend of Iberian
designs.

In India, Silver Jewellery came into
limelight with Mughal Era. Mughal
Empire, which promoted various arts
including ornaments making, gave much
importance to silver jewellery. Silver
ornaments including earrings, nose pins,
waist belts, heavy beaded silver
necklaces and so on were made and sold
on large scale. These were as important
as gold and diamond jewellery. Sold to
the lower class, as exquisite jewelley,
these were an important part of
important functions in marriage and
other occasions. Today also, these make
an important part of any Indian Custom.

Sterling Silver the best choice

Jewellery was originally made using
precious metals and rare gems. This
attribute made people yearn to possess
such masterpieces that were rare and
unique. Jewellery?s worth was based on
the metal, the stones used and the
craftsmanship. These factors made
jewellery an unattainable aspiration to
many and a luxury that only the elite
could afford. In recent years there has
been a paradigm shift. The use of
sterling silver has made jewellery a
dream come true to those who have been
just gaping at the windows of jewellery
shops. Silver has been used as a metal
for jewellery for long, but silver as
such is too soft a metal, and pure
silver is seldom used for making
jewellery. Sterling silver, however, is
a harder alloy lending itself for
exquisite craftsmanship Sterling silver
is 92.5 percent of silver and the
remaining an alloy that is predominantly
copper.

Sterling silver offers just the right
material properties like malleability
and flexural strength and allows itself
to be crafted into intricate designs.
Another great advantage is that sterling
silver can be gold plated or plated with
rhodium to make it look like platinum,
giving it the appearance of one of the
most expensive metals at the price of
silver. One more unbeatable feature
about sterling silver is that the metal
can be given an antique finish to add a
touch of nostalgia and a classic look to
jewellery.

Sterling silver jewellery has now swept
the market and one can find an endless
collection of beautifully designer
silver rings, earrings, bracelets,
necklaces, Silver Pendant Necklaces and
jewellery sets.

Though sterling silver came as a cost
effective replacement for expensive
jewellery, it has found the rich, the
elite and the celebrities too building
up huge and varied collections of
sterling silver jewellery, which
otherwise would have not been possible.
Today, sterling contemporary silver
jewellery designs are celebrity inspired
and designer inspired. There is not a
single intricate craftsmanship that is
not possible to imitate with this
wonderful metal.

Sterling handmade silver jewellery can
now be shopped with just the click of a
mouse and right from the comforts of
one?s home. There are many jewellery
sites that offer wide collection of
unique jewellery at rates that are down
to earth.
